Learn More About Sunbeam Family Services

March 22nd, 2011 Comment

For more than 100 years, Sunbeam Family Services has served central Oklahoma’s most vulnerable citizens. Our mission is to provide affordable, quality social services which result in improved individual and family functioning.

The 2011 Twestival OKC will be supporting Sunbeam's School-Based Counseling Program.

Sunbeam has a long-time partnership with Oklahoma City Public Schools and is taking a new approach to how we serve students. One of the main reasons that a student is not successful in school is that they have experienced, or are currently experiencing, adverse experiences in their life, such as trauma, abuse, neglect, unstable home life, etc. These experiences have an incredibly negative impact on that student’s social/emotional development, which is critical to one’s success. Students who have not developed their social/emotional abilities have a very difficult time with focusing, are not able to learn in group settings, have a difficult time with relationships and more.

Currently, the Oklahoma City Public School Districts employs counselors, with each counselor serving approximately 1500 students in their caseload. The counselor’s time is consumed with administering tests, which does not allow them to spend time with the students to help them grow socially and emotionally. To help meet this service gap, Sunbeam places licensed and licensed-eligible counselors in Oklahoma City Public Schools elementary and middle schools to meet with students in small groups and one-on-one. Through these therapeutic sessions, Sunbeam counselors help students overcome deficits and shorten the social/emotional lag.

Students in Sunbeam’s School-Based Counseling Programs experience…

  • 33% of students improve in achievement at their grade level
  • 26% of students improve their ability to follow direction
  • 18% of students show a decrease in bullying behaviors
  • 22% of students improve their ability to get along with peers
  • 18% of students improve their ability to self-control

With your help, we would be able to serve children in Oklahoma City Public Schools, helping them address the issues that hold them back from academic achievement. Through this effort, we will work with students in their social/emotional development, increasing school success and decreasing drop-out rates. We would love Twestival OKC’s support!
